In 1972 a quiet backwater - then the Aquarius Festival. Quite a few people discovered its beauty
and stayed. By 1986 it was still pretty quiet but bigger that in 1972.
By 2001, however - Nimbin had become a major destination, with tour buses and cars coming every day
to see this epitome of alternative lifestyles.
Wonderful for business.
For two days, however, the visitors explode! The Mardi Grass, held over one weekend every year,
has become one of the most popular events on the North Coast. For the two days there are higher traffic loads,
extra parking is required (paddocks opened), extra toilets are brought in from Lismore and the town becomes a hive of
activity.
Comment:
But . . . for two days does this make it a Hotspot? Are the roads safe?
Is it a Hotspot anyway for the other 363 days of the year? Are there some obvious managment options that would retain its
popularity but would relieve the congestion? Is this part of the attraction of the event?
