Coolspots
Byron Bay is the most popular tourist destination in the Northern Rivers of NSW
Using the 'Byron Index' of attractiveness (a largely artificial construct as a demonstration):

  • beach proximity and beach backdrop,
  • existence of alternative businesses,
  • presence of an 'icon',
  • ambiance (semi-rural atmosphere, coffee shops, street music etc.),
  • craft/art galleries,
  • good number of notable events or markets,
  • image (external via internet, advertising etc.), and
  • National Parks/State Forests proximity.
We can use GIS to to devise a 'coolspots' map, whereby the different towns and villages of the region are classified according to their relative attractiveness using the 'Byron Index'.
An envelope of a 2hrs drive from Byron by highway is shown as a guide.
