General:
This brewery was opened in Lion-Nathans redeveloped Portland Hotel in November 2001 as the Melbourne Alehouse. The place was re-launched as the James Squire Brewhouse in May 2003, in conjunction with the Australasian International Beer Awards that year. As well as some house-brewed beers, the place features James Squire products produced in Sydney. The brewery is an 800 litre plant which formerly operated in a Firkin brewpub in Great Britain.
