General:
This micro-brewery was first set up in the St. Ives Hotel in 1986 and was originally known as the Battery Point Brewery.
The operation fell on hard times in the late 'eighties and early 'nineties but was resurrected in 1992 when the present owners relocated the
brewing equipment to a different part of the building and recommenced production.
St. Ives beer is made with locally grown Tettnang hops, and malt produced from Tasmanian Franklin Barley. It is naturally conditioned,
clarifying and carbonating as it matures over a period of three months. The mature beer is not filtered, but is dispensed straight from
the lagering tank to the bar in a slightly cloudy state. Three bulk beers are produced and these are sold only in the St. Ives Hotel.
No packaged beers are produced.
Beers:
- Vicar's Bitter (4.3 - 4.5% alcohol)
A refreshing lager with a clean, fruity finish. Bittterness level is quite low for an Australian lager.
- Gothic Gold Lager (4.5 - 4.7% alcohol)
A full flavoured premium lager beer with a bitter finish derived from locally produced hops of European heritage.
- Old Bastard (5.2 - 5.4% alcohol)
A full-bodied, dark brown lager brewed in the Munich Style. Pleasant malty, nutty, and toasted characters are derived from the use of
additional roasted malts. Reminiscent of some traditional brown ales of England, although brewed in the lager style.
