Coeliac disease, an intolerance of the gluten protein found in barley, wheat and some other grains, causes damage to the small intestine, reducing the body's ability to absorb vital nutrients. Coeliac sufferers like John O'Brien who are also beer lovers are therefore in trouble, as beer is mostly brewed from barley and wheat. To get around this problem, O'Brien has developed his own gluten-free beers using alternative grains.
